Tree Pit Fertilization (Chalkood)

What Is Tree Pit Fertilization?

Tree Pit Fertilization, commonly known as “Chalkood,” is one of the most effective methods of supplying nutrients to fruit trees. This technique is used to compensate for nutrient deficiencies by placing fertilizers directly within the active root zone of the tree.

In this method, pits are dug at specific locations around the tree canopy and filled with suitable organic or chemical fertilizers. The nutrients gradually become available to the roots, providing the tree with a continuous source of nutrition throughout the growing season.

This deep-fertilization method is particularly beneficial for fruit trees, helping improve growth, productivity, and fruit quality.

How to Perform Tree Pit Fertilization

The most active roots responsible for water and nutrient uptake are usually located beneath the outer edge of the tree canopy (drip line). Therefore, fertilizer pits should be established in these areas.

When selecting pit locations, consider the tree’s age, planting system, soil conditions, and nutritional requirements.

Before digging, mark the area beneath the canopy and identify locations where irrigation water can easily reach the fertilizer pits.

Pits may be created individually around each tree or in continuous trenches along tree rows, especially in orchards irrigated by flood or furrow irrigation systems.

Benefits of Tree Pit Fertilization

  • Provides essential nutrients at the beginning of the growing season
  • Reduces flower drop and improves fruit set
  • Enhances overall tree vigor and health
  • Improves nutrient availability throughout the growing season
  • Promotes stronger and more extensive root development
  • Increases tolerance to environmental stresses
  • Improves soil structure within the root zone
  • Helps prevent branch dieback
  • Encourages healthy foliage growth
  • Reduces weed competition
  • Improves water infiltration and soil organic matter content

Best Time for Application

The ideal time for Tree Pit Fertilization is during the winter season, particularly in late winter before spring growth begins.

Winter application minimizes nutrient losses through leaching and allows rainfall to gradually release nutrients into the soil, making them available to the root system when active growth resumes in spring.
